The water saving advantages of updating toilets, aerators and shower heads

06/02/2015

Conditions in water supply have been worsening throughout the United States in recent years. People still haven’t learned how to use water effectively running it in full swing from all home appliances. If you as a homeowner start taking proper measures at your own home to cut down on water consumption, this will not only save you money, but also benefit the whole community.

There are multiple water saving methods and appliances that are pretty expensive to implement such as rain barrels, drip irrigation and on-demand water heaters. However, to reduce water use at home is possible with simpler and less expensive methods. Updating current full-flush toilets and shower heads, as well as adding aerators to your bathroom and kitchen faucets can do miracles for your household in terms of saving water as well as saving money. For example, 75% of water is used in the bathroom, and 25% of this amount is used for the toilet. The standard toilet uses about 4 gallons (15 liters) per flush. You can upgrade your existing toilet to an ultra-low flush counterpart which will use only 2 gallons (8 liters) per flush. Such a simple update represents a 70% savings in water flushed and will cut inside water use by about 30%. But you can also have a simple tank bank installed, which will also allow you to considerably save on water consumption.

Another simple method to cut on water use at home is installing water-saving shower heads and low-flow faucet aerators. Inexpensive water-saving low-flow shower heads or restrictors and tap aerators can be installed by any plumber. In addition long, hot showers can use 5-10 gallons (19-40 liters) every minute. If you can limit your showers to 5 minutes at a time and use low-flow showerheads, you can significantly save on water use and bills. “Low-flow” means it uses less than 2.5 gallons (10 liters) per minute.

Water conservation is one of the easiest practices to apply at home and should become a priority in every family. If you have decided to install low-flow aerators, showerheads, low-flush toilets, tank banks and other water-saving devices, contact South Orange County Plumbing Heating & Air Conditioning and our plumbers will do that in no time.
