Check Your Thermostat
First, make sure your thermostat is set to cooling mode and the temperature is correctly set. If needed, replace the batteries.
Change Dirty Air Filters
Dirty air filters restrict airflow, so it’s important to change them every few months. Here’s how:
- Turn Off the Air Conditioner: Make sure your A/C is off to avoid injuries and prevent dust from blowing inside.
- Locate the Air Filter: It’s usually found in one of these spots:
- The return air duct or grille
- The air handler unit of your HVAC system
- Behind the front grille of a window A/C unit
- Remove the Old Filter: Open the filter compartment. Depending on your unit, you might need to unscrew or unclip the access panel. Note the direction of the airflow arrows on the old filter.
- Check the Filter Size: The filter’s dimensions are printed on its side. Make sure you order the correct size to replace it.
- Install the New Filter: Insert the new filter with the arrows pointing towards the airflow (i.e. towards the blower).
- Close the Filter Compartment: Replace the access panel or grille and secure it.
- Turn the Air Conditioner Back On: Switch your A/C back on.
Unblock Condenser Coils
Condenser coils play a pivotal role in your system’s cooling cycle. They’re made from copper tubing and aluminum fins. Coils work with your system’s fan and refrigerant to release heat absorbed from inside your home into the outside air. Here’s how to clean them effectively:
- Turn Off the Power: Turn off your air conditioner using the thermostat and disconnect the outdoor unit’s power at the breaker or outdoor disconnect box.
- Access the Condenser Coils: Locate the coils on the sides of the outdoor unit and remove the access panel.
- Clear Debris: Brush away leaves, grass, and other debris from the coils and the area surrounding your A/C unit.
- Clean the Coils: Apply a commercial condenser coil cleaner, carefully following the product instructions. Then, rinse thoroughly with a garden hose on a low-pressure setting.
- Reassemble and Restore Power: Finally reattach the protective panel and turn the power back on.
Check for Refrigerant Leaks
If your A/C isn’t blowing cool air, it might have sprung a leak. Be on the lookout for these signs to determine if your unit is leaking refrigerant:
- Unusual noises, like hissing or bubbling
- Ice buildup on evaporator coils or refrigerant lines
- A spike in your energy bill without increased usage
If you suspect a leak, immediately call a professional technician. A/C technicians have the proper tools and training to locate and fix leaks safely and can recharge your system with the correct amount of refrigerant.
